Sunday January 6th, 2008 New York City | Brooklyn I have a couple of shows to review/show. The first one was the much anticipated Ron and Adam show at the Canal Chapter last night. My favorite pieces of the show were the more subtle ones, althought the performance and reality series aspect of the show were far more compelling (perhaps to the artists as well) than the traditional gallery exhibition.
This is one of Ron's pieces. A silly putty print of an add that he took out, one can only assume to sell his body to the night. He walked by as I was looking at it and pointed out that his real number is on there. "No rules, that's my number. Do what you want with it."
I love the pale pale blue Adam used to paint the mattress right onto the wall. Delicious.
The fun part of the opening was the guitar-off running throughout the night between Adam and Ron's bands . One was dressed in white and one was dressed in black. To get a full idea of what happened towards the end of the show, check out their new episode on their website www.adamandron.com
Next was a painting/drawing show I went to on Friday night. I ventured out into the bitter cold and skinny jeans of Williamsburg to go to Pierogi of Brooklyn. The first artist Ryan Mrozowski would make Bruce McGaw proud with his delicate use of color and lighting. In paintings these days, it's not common to see such a classical use of light and dark. I personally am a sucker for that shit.
This was my favorite piece of the show. It's called "Dead Man's Float." It's much more beautiful in person. Go to the Pierogi website to see better versions of his work.
The second artist, Martin Wilner is like a stoner 8th grader advanced beyond his years in project ambition and skill. His intentense micron pen and moleskin drawings are reminiscent of MC Escher.
Riding on the metro------->
Some of his more interesting work, selon moi is a study of maps in the middle east.
And an expressionistic rendering of a map of the US. Sorry for the bad photos, damn my camera phone.
Friday January 4, 2008 R U 4 REAL?
So you may or may not have heard about this arty duo making the streets of Miami Basel and the LES with a camera crew, filming a faux reality series about life as an artist. I have to give them props for putting themselves out there in a way that is not flattering, but sure to garnish a fair amount of attention. The plot revolves around the acceptance and preparation of their first solo show at the Canal Chapter. Oh, the drama. Adam is the sensitive craftsman, whose work I have admired since I saw them both exhibit at Every Third Day. (They are the co-founders of the 3B group and curators of the show. ) Meanwhile Ron's character serves as the balls-to-the-wall front man, with a pretty face and the emotional capacity of a 5 year old. It is funny and self-conscious and seems like a great publicity stunt if nothing else. I envy both boys who seem to have no external obligations or jobs to speak to hinder their art-making.
