Chelsea

So much art, so little time, and no beer left at any of the shows. That's how it felt this Thursday anyway. The highlight for me was a retrospective of Jurgen Teller's work, that I have long admired. He takes the flash -filled, underexposed snapshot to a whole new level and has really created his own language. It's something really special when a photographer creates his own analogue for the world, in a way that one would normally associate with painting. That said the crowd was a bit obnoxious and I think the timing of the opening with Fashion Week was no accident. He is represented by Lehmann Maupin

William Kentridge is one of my all time favorite artists. This gallery show is at Marian Goodman, one of the blue chip galleries of 57th Street. For me his charcoal drawings are like a rich chocolate dessert. I turn away from them leave feeling stuffed and spoiled. His marks are always beautiful and weighty and packed with personal symbolism and political commentary. It's worth making the trek to midtown for.

I was walking down E Houston on my way from ABC No Rio and I happened upon a new non-profit gallery space that just opened up (relocated from ?). The work was cool. it had this mysterious narrative running through the whole thing that I liked. Participant Inc, 253 East Houston St, NY 10002 or www.participantinc.org

Check out this article featuring Alex Heilbrun's glove sculpture, Breakfast with girlfriends at Blankspace Gallery

She said it was made during a time that she was feeling frustrated with painting. I can totally relate. Fuck painting, sometimes.
